The glass door to a bank, etched with the words 'T Mellon & Sons, Private Bankers'

Thomas Mellon established his bank in January 1870 on Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was a successful venture, and in 1871 he expanded to a nearby location that offered better premises.

The front of this building is based on an artist’s impression painted in 1910. The style of this building is earlier than this date, indicating that it was not purpose-built to house the bank. The location to which Thomas Mellon expanded in 1871, however, was build specifically to operate as his bank.
