What was school like for a child living in rural Ireland during Victorian times? This immersive learning workshop provides your pupils with an opportunity to experience a Victorian school lesson in our original single-room schoolhouse – Castletown National School. Discover who knows how to ‘toe the line’ and what learning by rote entailed, before noting down some spellings and completing some simple maths using our class abacus.  After familiarising themselves with the 3 R’s, pupils will take part in some drill exercises and enjoy some traditional schoolyard games.

This interactive learning session provides multiple opportunities for young people to engage directly with the museum collections and develop empathy and understanding of the life of a child in the past.  You may wish to bring your class suitably dressed for the occasion!

  • Handwriting practice using slates and slate pencils or pen and ink
  • Simple maths
  • Understand classroom discipline and punishment in the past
